The Dupont Circle Conservancy

The Dupont Circle Conservancy, formed in 1978, is a voluntary membership-based non-profit 501c(3) educational organization.
The mission of the Conservancy is to promote the preservation of the historic and architectural character of the greater Dupont Circle neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC; to represent the collective interests of its members before any public or private decision maker; and to educate the public and disseminate information about historic preservation and the history of Washington, DC,  in general, and the Dupont Circle neighborhood, in particular.
The Conservancy addresses matters impacting buildings and new construction in the Dupont Circle Historic District, the Massachusetts Avenue Historic District (from 17th Street to 23rd Street), the 16th Street Historic District, Strivers’ Row Historic District, the Greater 14th Street Historic District (1500 blocks), and landmark buildings in the area.  Over 5700 buildings and structures are in the Conservancy’s area of review.  [Click here for a map of the Conservancy jurisdiction and historic districts.]
The Conservancy comments on proposed changes are provided to the HPRB and relevant neighborhood organizations.  The Conservancy also participates in the city-wide Coalition for Greater Preservation Enforcement.
Guided by the skillful hand of Sandy Church, the grand son of the
noted american monumental sculptor A. Phimister Proctor, the
Conservancy, together with the Georgetown Citizens Association and
the [fill in the blank] raised over $4100,000.00 for the restoration of the 4
Bronze buffalo sculptures on the Q street bridge bridge spanning rock
creek park.

The conservancy and it's Historic partners raised money from over 100 Donors from all over the country and,  through the
brilliant grant righting skills of Laura Ames, the great great granddaughter of the sculptor, secured a grant form the Department of Transportation in excess of $60,000.00 toward the project. Working
together with the District Dept. of Transportation,The Proctor Museum
of Anacortes, WA  selected the conservator, Jensen Conservation
Services, Inc., to perform a historic conservation the four Q St. Buffalo.  Jensen is a fine choice as they have extensive experience in statue conservation and restoration, and have already conserved  three Proctor statues -- the Bronco Buster and On The War Trail, both located in Denver, and the Pioneer Mother in Kansas City. The  restoration will take place in Late 2006 and a re-dedication ceremony will be held shortly thereafter.  Stay tuned for more exciting news  about this Monumental project.
